Pneumology

The pulmonologist examines and treats disorders of the lungs and airways. During the consultation, the doctor discusses complaints such as shortness of breath, chronic cough, wheezing, asthma, bronchitis or possible signs of sleep apnoea. If necessary, additional tests, such as a lung function test (spirometry), allergy tests or imaging (X-ray or CT scan), follow to make an accurate diagnosis and suggest targeted treatment.

Specialist care for your lungs

What does a pneumological examination involve?

At Medical Centre, we perform various lung examinations to accurately assess your respiratory function and lung health. The choice of tests depends on your symptoms, medical history and risk factors. We always work in a tailor-made way, with attention to comfort, discretion and safety. In doubt about whether an examination is necessary? We will be happy to advise you.

Anamnesis

During the medical history, the doctor will discuss your respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing or fatigue. Medical history, smoking habits, allergies and family history are also discussed. This creates a complete picture of your lung health, which can be used to plan targeted follow-up examinations or treatment.

Clinical research

The physical examination gives the pulmonologist insight into possible respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD or infections. The doctor listens to your lungs, examines your breathing and assesses your general health. This allows a quick determination of whether additional tests are needed to make an accurate diagnosis.

Pulmonary function tests

Lung function tests provide insight into how well your lungs are working. Through measurements such as spirometry and body plethysmography, lung volume, airflow and gas exchange are evaluated. These tests help diagnose and monitor conditions such as asthma, COPD or restrictive lung disease.

Rx thorax

An RX-thorax, or chest radiograph, is a quick and simple imaging technique that allows the doctor to clearly visualise the lungs, heart and surrounding structures.

When is a lung examination necessary?

A consultation with a pneumologist can help identify the underlying cause of persistent cough, shortness of breath or chest tightness. Early diagnosis is important to identify respiratory diseases and initiate appropriate treatment, which can prevent serious complications. Some common indications for a lung examination are:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - Persistent cough, mucus production and increasing shortness of breath may indicate COPD, a chronic lung disease that progressively worsens without treatment.Asthma - Recurrent episodes of wheezing, tightness of breath or coughing, especially at night or on exertion, may indicate asthma.Pneumonia - Sudden onset of fever, chills, cough with coloured mucus or chest pain on breathing may indicate a lung infection that requires further investigation.Pulmonary embolism - Acute shortness of breath, sharp chest pain that worsens on inhalation, and increased heart rate may indicate pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening condition.Sleep apnoea - Loud snoring, breath stops during sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness can be symptoms of sleep apnoea, in which breathing temporarily stops during sleep.Lung cancer - Persistent cough, coughing up blood, weight loss or chest pain can be alarm signals of lung cancer and require prompt evaluation.

Timely detection prevents possible complications.

Recognising and treating breathing problems early can prevent serious consequences and preserve your quality of life. Do your symptoms persist or increase? Our lung specialist will help you with an appropriate treatment plan.

What can you expect during a consultation with the pneumologist?

1. Initial interview and anamnesis

A consultation with the pulmonologist begins with a comprehensive intake interview. The doctor asks specifically about your symptoms, such as coughing, shortness of breath or fatigue, and takes stock of your medical history, smoking habits, lifestyle and environmental factors. In this way, the doctor gets a complete picture of your lung health.

2. Investigate

Depending on your situation, the pulmonologist may recommend additional tests. This may include lung capacity tests, blood tests or imaging tests such as an X-ray or CT scan. These tests give a clear picture of how your lungs are functioning and support the detection of conditions such as asthma, COPD or sleep apnoea.

3. Explanatory note

After completing the examinations, the pulmonologist explains the findings and, if necessary, makes a diagnosis. A tailor-made treatment plan is then drawn up, for example with inhalation therapy, advice on allergies or further follow-up. Your file is updated afterwards in your eHealth or CoZo environment. In case of complex or unclear complaints, a referral to additional investigations or specialised care may take place.
